It's been far too long since I've posted an update on my (very small) corner of the big bad fashion world. I thought I should give all of you who grace my blog with your cyber presence, a not so brief summary on what I've been doing this summer. Unfortunately it is far less exciting or glamorous than how I spent my last summer. Fashion stalking couture shows and bike riding around Paris. I have made a few large changes in my everyday life that are quite exciting to me. All of which have been done with every intention to make money, save money, get experience and MOVE TO NEW YORK CITY! Yes, one small step for a small TOWN girl now and one giant leap for a large CITY girl later.
I have moved from the small, field-locked college town of Stillwater to Tulsa! I know, it's still Oklahoma but I do like it much more than I expected to. Much of this may be thanks to my fire haired (which describe both her appearance and personality) roommate, Meg. I met Meg while doing my summer internship at the fabulous "department" store Miss Jackson's in Utica Square. One of the few places in Tulsa where you can get designer duds like Diane Von Furstenberg, L.A.M.B, and Yigal Azrouel just to name a few of my favorites. At the begining of the summer I was actually ashamed that I was doing my internship in Oklahoma of all places. I thought that no respectable fashion girl stays in Oklahoma to do any type of fashion internship. Over the summer I have come to realize that I have very little experience in the retail and/or fashion field so Oklahoma was a great place for me to start. I actually have learned a lot and if I had to do it here, Miss Jackson's was one of the best places to do it. I have been blessed with many friends, a few great contacts and a much better understanding of the retail side of this business. I also met the fabulous Stacy Suvino. A FIT graduate and former Bergdorf Goodman's visual design employee, that for some magical and unknown reason, ended up at this store that I also ended up at. She is amazing at pretty much everything she does, from what I've experienced. Her partner in crime, Rachel Kern, is nothing to sneeze at either. She has a degree in art history and it shows! Together these two put together beautiful window displays and photo shoots. If any of you have seen the window displays at Miss Jackson's you should understand what I'm talking about. I have included a few pictures below. Am I right or am I right? Long story short I am now a proud ex-intern of Miss Jackson's!
Through helping Stacy and Rachel set up for one of Miss Jackson's big events, I mentioned to Stacy that I was wanting to move to New York. I jokingly asked if she knew anyone that needed an assistant of some sort. Less than a week later she tells me that a friend of hers, who is the head Visual Director for J. Mendel, is looking for someone to help her immediately. There was the small problem of me not graduating until December though but gave her my e-mail address to pass on if her friend needed anyone in January. Not even an hour later I get an e-mail from the Visual Director asking me questions regarding my experience, availability, etc. Long story short she offered me the internship and gave me the e-mail to the human resources director. Here I got to play a game of cat and mouse (the job being the mouse slipping past me and I being that cat chasing it). More than one time she told me it would not work due to legal reasons and me not being a student as of December. Well for those of you who don't know me, I don't take "that wont work" as a final answer... ever. Especially when it's something I want. This is why I've always gotten everything that I REALLY wanted. I work my butt off to find a way to make it work. So after three weeks and a lot of digging, it became official. I am moving to New York in January to work as an intern for J. Mendel for free. Yeah, New York rent with non-paying 45+ hour a week job plus a retail job on weekends. I'm so excited! With that being said if you would like to donate to the Michelle's New York fund, you can do so for free! Click on the links on this page, to the left of the screen and under this post. It only pays around $0.15 a click but after a few months and multiple clicks from you, that really adds up!
